KINDERGARTEN NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2022
Dear families,
I hope you enjoy your Holidays and have the best time ever with your children! I am looking forward to start the New Year with my class! I’m sure that everyone enjoyed our seasonal activities, including Christmas performance, and, of course, the party.
From January to June we will be focusing on Phonological Awareness, which includes Rhyming skills, syllable segmentation, blending onset/rime, sound segmentation/ deletion/blending; and identifying initial, final, and medial sounds. This month we will focus on rhyming and reading with guidance. We will also make a class rhyming book, and explore rhymes in Ukrainian stories.
Also, starting this month, we will discontinue having rest time after lunch. Therefore, please, do not return your child’s rest towel to school.
Home Reading- Child reading with guidance
We are going to start our Guided Reading/Home Reading Program this month, which is designed to help students in the early stages of reading. Your child will receive 2 home reading books on a weekly basis. You may want to read the book together with your child and then have your child try to read it back to you. It is helpful to have your child point to the words as he/she reads them. Encourage your child to use the pictures, beginning sounds and the predictable pattern of the text to assist them in decoding the print. Please give lots of encouragement and praise to make the early stages of learning to read enjoyable and positive for you and your child. Students are encouraged to look at the pictures so please don’t cover them up. Rather, encourage them to look at the picture and the letter sounds in the word to see if what they guessed from the picture makes sense. Students can read these books a few times (preferably on different days) if they like but do not have to read them every day. Please ensure that the guided reading books are placed in the special colorful bag provided and returned to school at the beginning of each week (on Thursday or Friday) so that new books can be issued. Please ask your child to take care of a new bag we will be re-using them next year.
Flu Season
The cold and flu season has begun and students are bound to get sick. I would like to suggest that if your child has a fever, diarrhea, or has vomited within 24 hours, please keep him/her at home. Germs spread readily and very quickly in a classroom setting. Sometimes, the symptoms appear during school. If this happens, I will contact you to come and pick up your child. Please check, whether your emergency contact persons are still able to come and pick up your child.
Also, ensure that your child is dressed for the season and that all of his/her clothing items are labeled.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Tymchuk.
